My experience in teaching has given me a love for analogies.  People learn best when they are presented with an analogy with which they can really connect emotionally.  And for me, the satisfaction I get when I see that “Ah-HA!” look, the one that tells me you really understand, well it’s why I do what I do.  So to really paint the picture of what Business IT Savvy will do for your business, I have an analogy for you.  Back when I was in college, I used to drive a 1976 VW.  Maybe you remember those “road trips” you used to make just to get away for a ‘study break’?  I really think the ‘study break’ was just an excuse and the real reason for the “road trip” was the journey itself.  Journey with me for a bit.

       That car and I went through a lot together.  It took me everyplace I went (well, almost everyplace!)  The pure joy I felt at being in total control of the car was exhilarating in itself.  Now, sometimes, we forget the joy of the journey, and get bogged down in the day to day dealings of running our business – and our lives.  So let’s spend a minute or two and flesh out this analogy a bit.  The car is your business.  It takes you places.  The destination is your vision statement – your stated goal or purpose for having this car in the first place.  Today my car (my real one) has an automatic transmission, but that ’76 VW was a standard.  There’s nothing like driving a stick shift!  If you’ve never driven a stick before, take my word for it, it gives you a feeling of joy and control like nothing else!  And there are other reasons to love a standard too.  They’re more reliable, the myriad of small moving parts in an automatic transmission over time cause wear and tear (and eventually costly repairs) that just isn’t there in a stick shift.  And they’re more fuel efficient too.  All great reasons for driving a stick, so why do 83% of all cars on the market today have automatic transmissions?
